Springplank is ceasing operations of Happie040 and Bakkie040 and is seeking an entrepreneur to take the concept forward.

Springplank is ceasing operations of its catering businesses, Happie040 and Bakkie040. The three outlets will be temporarily closed with effect from 1 September. Springplank is investigating the
opportunity to transfer the activities to an entrepreneur who wishes to continue the concept independently.

Happie040 and Bakkie040 were set up with a clear social aim: to offer people who are temporarily on the sidelines a place where they can gain work experience, develop their skills and take steps towards long-term employment. Springplank remains fully committed to this objective.

However, practice has shown that the combination of social support and commercial catering operation in its current form is insufficiently financially viable. Despite the dedication and commitment of staff, candidates, partners and visitors, the locations could not be operated on a cost-covering basis.

Springplank has therefore decided to refocus its efforts explicitly on its social
core activities: offering shelter, guidance and prospects to people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

“Happie040 and Bakkie040 were started with a good and valuable social intention. We have seen how much involvement there is around these initiatives and how many people have dedicated themselves to them. At the same time, we must recognise that the operating model in its current form is not sustainable enough. By making this choice now, we are protecting the continuity of our social services.”
said Jean-Pierre van Beers, interim director of Springplank.

The closure does not necessarily mean the end of Happie040 and Bakkie040. Springplank is now looking for an experienced hospitality entrepreneur or social entrepreneur who sees opportunities to continue the concept, either in full or in part. In doing so, consideration will also be given to preserving the social ethos behind the initiatives.

Springplank is in discussions with staff, business partners, landlords and other stakeholders regarding a careful winding-up and a possible relaunch. As soon as there is more clarity on this matter, those involved will be provided with further information.
